These gain their name from the red 'wattles', the small red pendant below their ears. They eat nectar, so with the callistemons (bottlebrush) coming into bloom it's 'party time' for them.

Fairly common across southern Australia, the name comes from the red wattles (akin to ornamental ears). They love flowering trees.

A Red Wattlebird ( Anthrochaera carunculata ) interrupted from its feast on nectar from the gum blossoms. The name is for the red wattles hanging just below where the ears should be. Tokina RMC 200/3.5 .
