reflections of the south side of the fort built in 1861-70. malaria and sinking foundations were major problems, and the fort is permanently flooded under one to two foot of water nowadays.

flooded interior of the 1860s fort, corridor in the south block which housed 300 officers and men. you'd need waders not wellies in here, as it's about 3 foot deep in places. also a torch 'cos there's lots of shell hoist holes and collapses floors to watch for. someone is supposed to have died exploring this in the '80s, and it's not got any safer.

flooded parade ground of the fort built in 1861-70, with the gun emplacements that originally overlooked the thames, buried in earth along the river frontage during WWII to lower the fort's profile.

1890 torpedo launch slipway next to cliffe fort, the first example of a guided missile system in the world controlled from the roof of the fort to attack ships in the river estuary. the torpedo was powered and guided by two long rotating wires attached to its propellers, which sounds rather heath robinson to me but apparently worked well enough to be state of the art for about 30 years.
