the chancel dates from c.1260-70, but the entire east end including half of each side wall was rebuilt in the mid c19. pevsner claims originality for the interior of these side windows, but does not say on what grounds, and they look as suspicious as the c19 east window to me and fall within the part rebuilt from the ground, so I'd say the jury was out unless you know better....

at first I thought this to be a jacobean roof over the north transept, but the lack of c18 nail holes from a ceiling and the mixture of polygonal necking with apparent cushion capitals on the pillars make me suspicious of what remains a good open roof. it's probably an old roof that had masses of C19 work done to it, but I couldn't find out enough details from lambeth palace records to nail this one down, so if anyone knows anything.....

tomb of mary scott, c18 with arms containing referance to the roet family with its links to chaucer and john of gaunt. beautifully cut slab, deserves better treatment than to have an altar leg plonked on it. there is a c17 brass also in the chancel which I found covered in wax and equally uncared for.

this shield with the date 1861 on cottages contiguous to the church carries the arms of christ's hospital and gives us a probable date of the restoration of the chancel, the bluecoat school being the patron of the living
