River Leven, Dumbarton
The little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), also known as the dabchick, is not a duck. It belongs to the grebe family, Podicipedidae. Grebes are freshwater diving birds and are distinct from ducks in several ways, including their physical characteristics, behaviors, and habitats. While both ducks and grebes are aquatic birds, grebes are generally smaller and have lobed toes instead of webbed feet, which aid in their excellent diving capabilities. The little grebe is known for its compact size, distinctive breeding plumage, and whinnying calls.
