The River Stour runs through the village and this scene is between the church and the village shop. The name Fontmell derives from a Celtic river-name meaning 'spring by the bare hill', and Magna—meaning great—distinguishes this settlement from Fontmell Parva (parva meaning small).

St Andrew's Church, Fontmell Magna, which is a pretty village in Dorset, situated in the Blackmore Vale, close to the chalk hills of Cranborne Chase. It is 5 miles (8 kilometres) south of Shaftesbury.
