Compare: VAB crawlerway, 1965 and 2009

14 Aug 2009 115
The image on the left is scanned from a slide my grandparents shot while driving around Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center in early 1965. The picture on the right was taken on August 7, 2009 from roughly the same location (perhaps a little closer in). Note that in the picture on the left, the apparently still-under-construction crawler is parked on the crawlerway, in front of the two VAB highbays used for storage and the hurricane safe haven today. Out of frame to the right of the "today" picture are OPF 1 and 2, the conjoined building where Orbiters are refurbished between flights.

The image on the left is scanned from a slide my grandparents shot while driving around Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center in early 1965. The picture on the right was taken on August 7, 2009 from roughly the same location (about 10 yards back), showing the area as it looks today (the wider angle of the photo on the right is indicated by the desaturated area).

VAB

11 Aug 2009 73
The VAB as seen from the service structure at LC-39A.

Passage

11 Aug 2009 84
The passage between the storage/staging high bay and the transfer aisle in the VAB. The passage is used to transfer components (Saturn stages, nowadays Orbiters, ETs, and SRB segments) from the transfer aisle into the high bay, by lifting them up and over the wall using a 175-ton bridge crane.

New MLP

11 Aug 2009 61
Construction of the new mobile launch platform and launch umbilical tower for Constellation/Ares-I, next to OPF-3 at the VAB.

High Bay

11 Aug 2009 83
Looking straight up in the safe haven high bay.

Passage

A bridge crane seen through the passage in the wall between the safe haven highbay and the transfer aisle.

Safe Haven Stands

11 Aug 2009 80
Two of the stands for parking an MLP, in the "safe haven" high bay in the VAB. Note the similar layout but different appearance of these, vs. the Apollo-vintage versions in other photos.

Belly

11 Aug 2009 89
The underside of one of the MLPs, in this case the one on which the Ares-1X vehicle is being stacked.

Big Door

11 Aug 2009 69
The inside of one of the giant garage doors into the VAB.

Ares-1X

11 Aug 2009 74
The upper stage simulator and spacecraft/LAS simulator for the upcoming Ares-1X test flight. Both components are dummy units, and won't actually perform during the test.

Ares-1X

11 Aug 2009 105
The dummy spacecraft for the upcoming Ares-1X test flight. Note the boost protective cover (nosecone) on the front of the capsule no longer looks anything like this on the real vehicle, due to subsequent configuration changes.

External Tank

11 Aug 2009 68
An external tank hanging thirty-odd feet above the floor in the cross-aisle. This is the only time that I ever saw a complete ET not on stands or a transport dolly.

Saturn Platforms

11 Aug 2009 90
Work platforms in the low bay left over from Saturn days (identifiable by the red paint) tethered in the up position. The low bay had a half-dozen or more of these cells, where a Saturn stage could be stood up for checkout prior to stacking/integration.

SRB Nose

11 Aug 2009 88
The forward end of an SRB, containing its separation motors and parachutes.

External Tank

11 Aug 2009 78
An external tank hanging thirty-odd feet above the floor in the cross-aisle.

Floating ET

11 Aug 2009 79
An external tank hanging in the transfer aisle of the VAB.

Meatball
