Clouds Over North Fork

07 Jun 2015 121
Experimenting in between thunderstorms with the newly-converted IR d7000. Converted to monochrome because I really don't like the colors coming out of LifePixel's white balance setting.

Rain Coming

Fortunately, it never quite got to us.

A shelf cloud in mid-Kansas. In reality, the cloud was much darker and more ominous.

Yes, Kansas really is that flat...at least in the western third.

Mt. Massive

This black cloud suddenly appeared to the south, prompting a hasty retreat back to the jeep...from about 200 vertical feet below the summit. And we left none too soon, as we were chased down the lower meadow by lightning and thunder, making it back to the jeep at an all-out run just before a noachian rain opened up. You don't mess with storms in the mountains.

One of the Half Moon Lakes. Oh, look at that -- a storm cloud on the horizon...

Weather doesn't look quite so bad over there...

Columbine

Despite it being the state flower, with its image on so many things in Colorado, I had never actually seen a columbine until this hike.

A somewhat pale columbine.

I don't know that this peak has a name, but it's the single most picturesque part of the southwest Mt. Massive trail. You pass by it on the hike up the valley, and it's a major feature of the scenery all the way up to the saddle, changing its appearance all the way up as you see it from different angles.

The weather doesn't look so bad over there, either, but maybe it's time to go back down, just in case...
