ETS - Eastern TigerSwallowtail [ Papilio glaucus ]
- one of the largest butterflies in our area
- yellow with black are male or female
- one has to check the orange spots and blue coloring
- on lower wings to determine if male or female
- also come in black, but they are always female
- sometimes difficult to identify
- there are several dark Swallowtail butterflies here
- so, just dig out "Kaufman Field Guide to Butterflies of North America"

must be the nectar in the Creeping Phlox -
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly did her best to camp out in the middle of these -
but the winds had other ideas -
they blew her from one patch to another -
poor gal is a bit worn out -
dinged here and there -
but, she was a determined gal -
there was nectar and she was going to get it !

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail [ Papilio glaucus ] ...
when flowers began to bloom ..
would see one flitting by ..
overhead, as if to say 'See you later' ..
today, through the Living Room window ..
this one stopped ..
going from one mound of Creeping Phlox to another ..
just when it looked as if it were leaving ..
another one showed up !
shall go plant myself outside tomorrow for a good photo of them ..
even though their favorite flowers are far from blooming stage ..
they are welcome to dine in the Garden Of Surprises ..
any day ..

.. more info:
"The Eastern tiger swallowtail, scientifically known as Papilio glaucus, was designated as North Carolina's state butterfly in June of 2012.
The butterfly is native to North America, and one of the most common and most easily recognized species found in the Eastern U.S.
It's widely accepted that the Eastern tiger swallowtail was the first North American butterfly species to have been illustrated. John White - an artist and cartographer who was the governor of the Roanoke Island colony (that came to be known as the Lost Colony) - first drew the species in 1587 while on an expedition for Sir Walter Raleigh in Virginia.
The male is usually yellow with four black stripes on each wing. Females are usually yellow or black. You'll find them from spring to the fall, and usually around the edges of woods, in open fields, in gardens or by roadsides. They usually hang out around the tops of trees, but they like to drink from puddles on the ground (sometimes in large huddles or clusters)."
