Token greenery

Balfron Tower is arranged such that residents get a sunset view over Central London to the west (subject to there being an actual sunset on the day of course). These days, The Shard provides striking reflections earlier in the day as well.

Some flats have great need of all the heating they can get; others not so much, apparently

Up the stairs

One of the artists I had a chance to speak to told me that she had only known both lifts to be simultaneously defective twice in the 8 months or so she had lived there, so she may not be so familiar with this view.

Behind bars

Getting up close to the filthy windows. I love the effect and I'm glad the picture has come out as I remember it.

These run at every 3rd floor on the east side of the building. Why only every 3rd floor? Well, the flats are arranged such that some are on a single floor, while others have internal stairs either up or down. We were able to see examples of each.

Corridors of no power

An example showing how decayed the building is appearing these days. This will no doubt be jazzed up with LED lights and the concrete covered over for the nouveau riche who will be appearing in a couple of years.

Letting some light in

With a bit of light flooding in, maybe it doesn't look so bad

Ripped out

One of the artists in residence has a photographic exhibit of flats after the previous residents have moved out, some of whom feel that they are being evicted in order that the area can be gentrified as is the case with so many traditional working-class areas of inner London

24 storeys

On my visit, the plan that emerged was a lift to the top (the 24th floor), visit a few artists, then make my way down the stairs to see what was occurring on the other levels.

Service tower

This contains a pair of lifts, drying rooms now redundant and empty, and a boiler room at the top to provide heating to the whole building. This feature is, according to one person I spoke to, erratically effective, with some rooms overheated and others left cold.
