The arts & crafts building was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, who also designed the Whitechapel Gallery and the Bishopsgate Institute.

The original Whitechapel Gallery building was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, who also designed the Bishopsgate Institute and the Horniman Museum. The museum expanded into the library next door in 2009.
