The original Whitechapel Gallery building was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, who also designed the Bishopsgate Institute and the Horniman Museum. The museum expanded into the library next door in 2009.

Those gold leaves are a permanent installation, I believe. The gallery has had an interesting history as one of the most important cultural institutions in the East End. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitechapel_Gallery
