Pea Patch

10 Jun 2007 234
This is socialist agriculture, western Mass style. Members of the Food Bank Farm buy shares and get organic veg (50% of what's grown, divided among the shareholders) from June to December, and the other 50% of the harvest goes to the Western Massachusetts Food Bank for distribution to low-income families and programs. Most of the produce is picked for us, but there are also U-Pick crops: peas, herbs, strawberries, flowers, beans, okra, plum tomatoes, etc. This year's peas look like they're doing really well. Veggies

Ok, I didn't grow this stuff like those of you with community garden plots in Northampton or allotments in London, but I did pick it and it's organic. In addition to the farm share of produce that members pick up each week, the Food Bank Farm grows certain crops for us to pick ourselves -- strawberries, peas, beans, herbs, flowers, etc. I passed the Roma tomatoes on my way to the okra patch -- there are about a zillion tomatoes on the vines, but it will be another two weeks before they're ripe. I'll be picking a couple buckets full to roast and then freeze.

Before Roasting

Cut in half, with crushed garlic and basil on top, drizzled with olive oil, plus a little salt, and ready to go into the oven at 220 degrees for many, many hours. I did two batches (two pans per batch) of these yesterday when it was 95 degrees outside. I'm a nutter.

Whitstable Bay Organic Ale

Shop window, Harbour Street, Whitstable. Strange color, I think. See where this picture was taken. [?]
