Take Courage

Red Cross Way, Southwark. I thought these were encouraging words left over from the war (the South Bank was pretty heavily bombed in the blitz), but it turns out that it's an advert for Courage Ale. As seen in the film "O Lucky Man."

Red Cross Garden

Redcross Way. The garden, hall and cottages were established on the site of a derelict paper factory by Octavia Hill, social reformer, 1887-90. The garden, which was described then as an ‘open air sitting room’ for the people of Southwark, has recently been restored. There were volunteers working on it when I passed through, and many people using it as a pleasant place to sit and eat their lunch. See where this picture was taken. [?]
