The ST-500 works nicely

Stripping AWG-30 wire-wrap material works beautifully. I've had to play with the thickness setting a bit. The green wire has a bit thicker insulation and I had to set the dial to AWG-26 or 28.

Bodge wire

Just testing if the latest change to the schematic of a project really works. It does. Unfortunately now I have to patch some libraries as well. Otherwise there is a beat-note in LED brightness due to unsynchronized PWM interaction. Fortunately I don't HAVE to use the PWM functionality of that pin, but I could...

16A... sure...

You need ad least 1.5mm² to handle 16A safely. 0.5mm² is simply not enough! But does the actually have 0.5mm² of copper inside? Let's check!

Supposedly 0.5mm² of copper

Hmmmm. Each wire has about 20 strands. Diameter 80µm. There's just NO WAY that adds up to 0.5mm². Depending on how I calculate the cross section (multiply strand cross section vs. measure wire diameter with air gaps), I end up with values between 0.005mm² and 0.15mm² - NOT ENOUGH.

Is that really copper?

I tried to twist the strands together. They immediately sprung back. They're very flexible, but too springy.

In it goes

The 2nd time I did this I used tweezers as a heatsink for the cable. I need to get a small hemostat for this kind of job. Time to pester the next best pharmacist! I will enjoy the inquisitive reaction: "What do you need THAT for?" The same thing happened when I wanted some syringes with needles. Of course I needed them for dispensing a liquid. Is it my fault that they don't sell un-sharpened needles?

Still at rest

I won the fight against this MBI5030 PWM LED driver. It turned out that the datasheet I got from the distributor's website is "preliminary". I was trying to use stuff that simply isn't in the final silicon (like parity check for example). Still some functions don't work (like auto-shutoff if the PWM clock is missing). Oh well... The resulting Arduino-ized code may be found here .

Getting there...

The aviary is the biggest single attraction of London Zoo that's worth seeing.

This creature doesn't seem to move often as algae grow on it.
