In Memory of a Brave Man

This crucifix is affixed to the outside wall of St Peter's Church, in Petersfield, Hampshire in memory of Commander Loftus William Jones RN VC. His last command in WW1 was HMS SHARK. His Victoria Cross was awarded posthumously - the citation can be read here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loftus_Jones For anyone who doesn't know, the VC is the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Not my normal choice of photographic subject - but I had to do something while my wife was shopping and I enjoyed tracking down the story behind it.

Last Light Over Gosport - 1

Yesterday showed the promise of a decent sunset and I settled down to wait for it. In the end, despite a hint of colour in the sky it came to nothing and this was the best I had to show. The tower you can see houses the Royal Navy Submarine Escape Training Tank which remained here after HMS Dolphin (which included the Submarine School), was closed down in 1998. The School was relocated to the West Country, but the Tank remains in use (as part of what is now called Fort Blockhouse). The Tower overlooks the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour.
