The Royal Oak and the Old Mill

10 Feb 2023 17 26 180
The weather here yesterday started off cold, cloudy and drizzly..........but by the time I had to drive my wife to her nail appointment just after lunch, it was starting to clear, so I decided to drive an extra couple of miles to Langstone after I dropped her off. This is the sight that greeted me on arrival.......sunshine, reasonably calm waters (just after high tide) and some lovely reflections. About an hour later the sun had gone and the clouds were back. I know I've posted many shots of this place.........but I just can't resist it.........could you? Splendid viewed large on black, if if say so myself :-)

The Royal Oak and The Old Mill At Low Tide

Taken from the end of Langstone Village High Street, looking out over the harbour. Don't be fooled by the sunshine..........it was eye-watering cold at around -5 degrees C, and quite windy, but a nice walk nevertheless. You've probably seen images of this pub and the mill before on my photo stream..........it is one of my go-to places when I don't have much time. On this day I had a couple of hours to kill while my wife had a manicure. Thank you for all your visits, comments and stars over the past week. I hope you all have a good weekend. Take care.......and stay warm.

The Dark Satanic Mill

05 Dec 2020 22 21 167
Taken just before dusk at the Old Mill, Langstone Harbour, Hampshire. To explain the title check out this link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_did_those_feet_in_ancient_time I'm not a religious person, but I remembered the phrase "dark satanic mills" from school and seeing this mill silhouetted against the sky reminded me of it. Once I had the photo it just needed a tweak or two in post processing to get it the way I wanted it. I hope you like it.

Taken at low tide. The Old Mill, now a private residence, was a working mill until WWI. It is made up of three distinct parts, the mill itself built across a creek, built in 1800 – 1832, the mill store, built in 1800 – 1832 on brick piers and the oldest part, an attached windmill, built in 1720 – 1740. Barges could be brought up to the mill for transporting the milled goods away around the coast.

Have a good 'un folks :-) The Chesapeake Mill is a watermill in Wickham, Hampshire, England. The mill was designed and constructed in 1820 using the timbers of HMS Chesapeake, which had previously been the United States Navy frigate USS Chesapeake. Chesapeake had been captured by the Royal Navy frigate HMS Shannon during the War of 1812. John Prior paid the sum of £500 for the timbers sold at Portsmouth. The interior of the mill was designed around the dimensions of the deck beams. The mill remained in operation until 1976 and now serves as a retail centre for antique and gift sellers. Langstone Harbour, Hampshire, UK. You can also see the ruins of Warblington Castle in the background. I make no apologies for posting yet more images of this area...........it's one of my favourite places to go when I don't have much time, especially in this lovely weather.

High Tide at The Old Mill

Rubbish weather and shift work have been playing havoc with my photography life lately and as a result I've not been able to get out much and when I have I've not been able to go too far. The Old Mill is only a couple of miles from where I live and it and the surrounding area, are one of my favourite places to go when I haven't got much time, but need to get out! This was taken last Thursday during a brief break from the rain and unrelenting grey skies. I make no apologies for having posted dozens of photos of this over the years!

Langstone Harbour. It was a bit dull earlier in the day but we'd taken my granddaughter to feed the ducks - and they didn't mind the weather as long as the food kept coming!

H F F - No sails

Happy Fence Friday folks..!! This was what greeted us at the top of Halnaker Hill last Monday. The mill has had it's sails removed and has been fenced off while structural surveys are carried out. I hope they decide it's worth restoring.

My favourite standby when I haven't got time to go anywhere else. The weather was murky and windy, so mono seemed the way to go - with a slight sepia tint. A bit more of it's history here for the history buffs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langstone_Windmill
