Siskin for lunch

This was yesterday in my backyard. Hawk - 1; siskin - 0. I doubt the score could have been otherwise.

Chickadee in the bushes

I was sitting on our deck when I noticed a couple of black-capped chickadees playing in the bushes just below. This was taken through the balusters.

Sharpie's lunch

We were sitting quietly after a couple of hours of working in the garden, relaxing on the deck with the cat who was just staring at some juncos in the bushes underneath the deck. There were also some pine siskins eating at the feeder two metres over the cat's head. Suddenly, this sharp-shinned hawk flashed through our company, grabbing a siskin on the way. It was so fast the cat didn't notice anything. The hawk settled in at the corner of our garden, about ten metres away, in some thick bushes. There are no leaves on the bushes yet, so I could see him and took a dozen or so pictures. Eventually he got fed up with my presence and left, though I expect he came back a few minutes later for his bit of siskin tartare.

A pine siskin's face, with some of his lunch in hi…

Well, the title says it all. This is a small fragment of the original frame, but the siskin pretty well filled the original frame. I was about 60 cm from him for five minutes while he ate and I took lots of pictures. "Do you like this side? Here, let me turn around. Like that side? Oh here, here's my tail. Back of my head? Mouth closed? Want that?" Etc.

My teapot gets used a lot

In over sixty years of drinking tea -- always steeped in teapots -- this is my favourite pot. We've had it for fifteen years or so, perhaps longer than that. Over the years its cover knob broke and I epoxied it back together, and the handle pretty well disintegrated, too. For ten years or more, I've been periodically tying the handle together with various kinds of string. The string makes for good insulation as well as holding the handle together.
