Everywhere I go I find the Grand River. Or something. Upstream from Lyons, Michigan.

Where the Dimondale Dam Was

24 Oct 2014 2 1 256
Michigan's Grand River was dammed at this location in 1850 by Isaac Dimond, who laid out a village around the dam, called Dimondale, in 1856 (I'm leaving out a lot of complications). Dimond build a sawmill in what's now Lions Community Park, and a grist mill in the present (and brand new) Danford Island Park. This photo was taken from Island; Lions is on the far shore of the river. After some rebuilds of the dam and both mills the village thrived as a mill town, supporting settlers and farmers in Windsor Township, southwest of Lansing. The 1880 incarnation of the dam was removed in September of 2006 and replaced with what the village and the state call a "W" weir. Who am I to argue with that description? I had a Dimondale address for about a dozen years, though I've never lived in the village. It's now pretty much a Lansing suburb, though the town seems to resist the description.

Lyons, Michigan, on the Grand River. It just seemed like a good day to visit a big dam.

My grandmother and my mother; I think this is Hardy Dam but that opinion's subject to correction. September, 1975. I believe this was Grandma Kroeger's last trip to Michigan. She grew up in Iowa, moved to Kalamazoo when she was about 40, then to San Diego a few years later. Her children settled in those places and others, so she'd occasionally tour the country to visit them. A pretty day at the dam. Roger Dinda photograph; Argus C3.

Holding Back the Lake

Huntington Dam, on the Wabash near Huntington, Indiana. The lake is currrently named for former congressman J. Edward Roush , but may have been Huntington Reservoir when I shot the pic in 1993 (Yahoo Maps still calls it that, I see). Roush had some history as a conservationist, including a stint with the EPA after losing his congressional seat to Dan Quayle. There's reportedly good fishing below the dam (there were certainly fishermen there when we visited), and the recreation area around the lake seems to be well-reviewed.

Leland River

Fishtown in winter.... One last view of the river, and the dam. This is similar to a photo I posted a few days back, but shows more detail on the buildings. Fishtown @ Leland, Michigan. Better large! There's a super-large (2800 pixel-wide) version of this pic , if you want to examine the details....

Falling Waters

Fishtown in Winter.... Here's the Leland River, looking from Fishtown towards the brand-new dam. The hotel across the way is Falling Waters Lodge. This view just invites photographers to whip out their cameras. Compare with my Dad's 1973 picture to see how little the view's changed in three decades. We'll take a closer look at the dam in a day or two.
