Split Rock Hazard

13 Aug 2006 64
A decade ago, we--my mother, Joan, Kalamazoo Richard , Preacher Debra , and me--spent our vacation wandering around northern Minnesota . One of the main objects of the trip was taking Mom to see Split Rock Lighthouse , but when we stopped the fog was so heavy that you couldn't actually see the lighthouse. Not a disaster, exactly, but certainly a disappointment. Mom claimed to be satisfied that she'd seen the interior. Visibility was far better this week. Here's a photo which shows pretty well why a light was needed at that location; shallows, rocks, and high cliffs. A bad combination.

Keepers

When Lake Superior's Split Rock Lighthouse was constructed early in the twentieth century, it was inaccessible by land and nearly inaccessible by water. So they staffed the place with three keepers, and built nice houses for their families. The nearest house is now a museum, restored to 1925 or thereabouts. The other two are in use by the park. Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, northern Minnesota.
