When Lake Superior's Split Rock Lighthouse was constructed early in the twentieth century, it was inaccessible by land and nearly inaccessible by water. So they staffed the place with three keepers, and built nice houses for their families.
The nearest house is now a museum, restored to 1925 or thereabouts. The other two are in use by the park.
