Delton, more or less. While I took this photo a few years ago, today's the same sort of day.

I Keep Seeing Sandhill Cranes

South of Delton, Michigan. About a month ago I found dozens of cranes in this field ; today there were but three. And a reminder: The Baker Sanctuary Crane Fest is this weekend. We'll be there on Sunday.

Richard and the Little Cabin

19 Jan 2006 82
It's Kalamazoo Richard 's birthday. Happy Birthday, bro! I thought I'd honor that event by posting a few photographs. Here he is, at age 18, frolicking in the yard at our cottage on Wall Lake in Delton, MIchigan. Spring, 1972. We'd had an ice storm; as you can see, it did lots of damage. We'd spend the day cleaning that up. The cottage was one of two our parents owned; they'd originally been rental units constituting half of a small lakeside resort. Mom & Dad were about to sell our Palmer Avenue home, and we'd live on the lake until moving into the Wellington Road place in December. Dick & I shared this little cottage; Mom, Dad, & Debbie stayed next door in the somewhat larger, and better-equipped, place. ---------------- I drove by Wall Lake a few weeks back, and was quite surprised to discover that the cottages were still standing. Many of their neighbors have been replaced with more substantial places; I expect these to eventually meet that fate.

Near Delton, Michigan, where you're never far from a lake and/or a swamp. Several years ago; I'm guessing there's more snow today.

Horses, Prairieville

I figured as long as I was at Prairieville I should shoot some pix of the local farms. This one's on the road between Prairieville and Delton. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366 Snaps project discussion and stats for November 27 .

Downtown Delton

Explored #347 (10/17/2013). Thanks! Delton'a a small village, between lakes that used to be resorts but are now mostly suburban. The town's certainly got a Central Business District--a supermarket, schools, a library, a church, a post office, bars, even a little industry--but the place lacks the row of red brick Main Street commercial buildings we usually associate with midwestern downtowns. Four decades back my parents owned cottages on one of those lakes , so while Delton doesn't exactly feel like home, it's certainly more familiar to me than, say, Hastings. ========== A year ago yesterday my brother unexpectedly landed in the hospital, for tests & observation, and I took this photo during a brief stop at Delton's supermarket on my way to visit him in Kalamazoo. Most of the day's photographs were taken from the hospital parking ramp, either of the lot itself or of the cemetery which neighbors the hospital campus. The best of the parking ramp pix became the 366 Snaps photo; under the thoroughly distracted circumstances, it was pretty good. This was the sort of day that kills photo-a-day projects. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . Beechwood Drive, Wall Lake, Delton

Ah, memories.... ========== See the 5035 First Street photo for some discussion of what Wall Lake means to me. Eventually you grow weary of always shooting pictures in the neighborhood. I delivered the Nero Wolfe books to my sister last February 17, and found a chance to photograph something different. On my way to Kalamazoo I stopped in Delton, where we'd lived for a time in the seventies, to photograph the cottages my parents had owned. Turns out that only one is still standing. I also took a few pix of the area, and wished we still owned the property. I got off the highways for the return trip from Kalamazoo, since I had the time and knew the roads. The Christle barn photo I posted to 366 Snaps was an opportunity shot; it happens to be another Delton address, but near Fair Lake. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 5035 First Street, Wall Lake, Delton

23 Feb 2013 2 193
About the time the Army shipped me to Vietnam my parents purchased a pair summer cottages--part of a retired resort--at Wall Lake. While the cottages weren't on the water, you could see the lake in two directions, and we had docking privileges at the end of the road. 'Twas a pleasant place to summer. This was the larger cottage. A few years back the little cottage was still standing, but it's now gone. (But the photos I took in 2005 are just awful. Last February 17 I did better.) Mom & Dad sold the Kalamazoo house in 1972, so for a time this was our primary residence. Neither cottage was properly winterized--in fact, the small cottage only had a space heater--so we were glad to move back into Kalamazoo when they bought a Winchell-neighborhood home in early December. My parents sold the Wall Lake place in '73. Living in two locations turned out to be a lot of work. So we never returned to First Street, except to inspect, clean up, and visit friends. Frankly I'm surprised that any of the resort cottages remain. The base of Wall Lake's point had mostly cabins when we lived there; now there are many substantial homes. Four decades will do that. ========== This photograph is an outtake from my 2012 photo-a-day project, 366 Snaps . 366/2012 project discussion here .
