Age 29: A Younger Me

Another of my father's photos. I look so young. Photo by Roger Dinda 1978

Memorial

Very pretty flowers from Mom's funeral , I think sent by the Banner family/Riverside Greenhouse. This basket decorated our front porch all last summer, then perished with the frost. A year later it lives on, carrying my mother's memory, in this photo.

Hatti and Rog Touch Feet

08 Apr 2010 132
Mom and Dad, making contact across the living room early in 1972. This is the interior of our house at 1318 Palmer in Kalamazoo. I routinely take better pictures than this, but there aren't many I like better. Today would have been Mom's 84th birthday.

Mother's Day

My mother, Hatti Dinda, on Mother's Day in 2000, at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. That's Preacher Debra in the (near) background. Today would have been Mom's 82nd birthday.

Preacher Debra , chatting with other graduates after the ceremony. Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa; May 14, 2006.

Hatti

Mom would have been 80 today. Dad took this photo on an unspecified Lake Michigan beach in 1976. Actually, he took this picture three times, which was definitely out of character; but it's a nice picture. Looks comfy, doesn't she?

Mom and Lake Michigan

21 Mar 2006 79
Fifteen years ago this week. I think this is Christmas Cove, which is north and west of Northport. Fundamentally, though, the precise location doesn't really matter; it's a beach, and that's Lake Michigan. My father passed away in November of 1990. A few months later I got a call from Mom, who'd decided to escape to Traverse City for a few days and invited me to come along. Of course I accepted. So in March of 1991 we spent a long weekend visiting places she and Dad had been frequenting for decades--Leland, Northport, Suttons Bay; the beaches at Glen Haven, at Peterson Park, at both Traverse Bay lighthouses, at Christmas Cove. We had meals at Fischers, at Dills, at the Bluebird. We stopped at Jolli-Lodge; since I'd not been there before, she gave me a little walking tour. Then she arranged with the Jolliffes for her summer vacation. But mostly we walked the beaches, Mom lost in her thoughts, me lost in mine. Dad was a beach-walker, and a collector of Petoskey Stones. He was on our minds, and in our hearts.

Dinda Family at Meijer Gardens

24 Nov 2005 123
My sister, Debra Jean ( Preacher Debra ), my mom, Hatti, and my brother, Richard ( Kalamazoo Richard ), at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids on Mother's Day, 2000. Shot with my Nikon N90s. Since we've just decided that driving 90 miles each way in today's weather wouldn't be a good way to spend Thanksgiving, I'll not be seeing Debbie & Dick for the holiday. So I'm posting my favorite picture of them. Thanksgiving blessings, everyone.

Elsie & Hatti

My grandmother and my mother; I think this is Hardy Dam but that opinion's subject to correction. September, 1975. I believe this was Grandma Kroeger's last trip to Michigan. She grew up in Iowa, moved to Kalamazoo when she was about 40, then to San Diego a few years later. Her children settled in those places and others, so she'd occasionally tour the country to visit them. A pretty day at the dam. Roger Dinda photograph; Argus C3.

Richard Paul

28 Nov 2005 80
My brother, Dick ( Kalamazoo Richard ), round 'bout his eighteenth birthday (late 1971 or early 1972). A little fuzzy, and he looks so young . Note the peace symbol where his unit patch belongs.... Taken with my then-new Minolta SR-T 101. This negative was damaged in the camera (the whole roll of film's a mess) and I don't believe the developer printed this frame, so I'm pretty sure Richard's never seen this one. Sorry about the dirty scan, but the scratches seemed worth keeping.

My Father the Firefighter

28 Jan 2006 87
Dad, posed with a feather duster(!) for Martin Sernstinger on KFD Engine 4, inside the old Central Fire Station in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Approximately 1955. Dad was a firefighter for most of the 1950s, then moved to another career. In a real sense, though, he was a firefighter for the rest of his life. His firefighter friends certainly treated him as one of the group, and several showed up for his funeral.

KFD 16

10 Dec 2005 185
Another Martin Sernstinger photo of my father, Roger Dinda, in Engine 16 of the Kalamazoo Fire Department. This time Dad's actually driving it. 1955 or thereabouts. That's the Kalamazoo State Theater in the background. Still standing; just as wonderful today as it was new, in the late 20s. It's grown kinda raggedy, though.

Dad & K.F.D. 16

20 Nov 2005 96
My father, Roger Dinda, newly promoted to Driver, and Kalamazoo Fire Department's truck 16, in 1955 or thereabouts. This was taken in front of Old Station 1, the Central Station at the time. 'Twas called "Ones" or "Central," as we discussed in the comments to one of my brothers' pix. The station's been gone since the sixties. Another Martin Sernstinger photo. I have a bunch of these, and have created a special set for 'em.

Hatti & Fritz

My mom, and her dad, on an Iowa porch around 1930. This old, battered photograph is a family treasure.

Dad's Ducks: slide number 1

25 May 2006 60
Shot by my father, Roger Dinda, in 1954; scanned from a slide. This is the photograph I've seen most often in my life, because it lived in Dad's projector as the default slide. It cleaned up nicely. On the day Dad was born, the nation was cheering Lindy , and raising money to rescue New Orleans . He'd have been 79 today.

Family Gathering

10 Apr 2014 228
A bunch of my cousins--and other relatives--got together for lunch today. The "cousins lunch" has its roots in my parents' generation. A couple decades ago my mom was fond of pointing out that most of the "cousins" attending the get-togethers at the time were, in fact, widows of cousins. It's a larger group, these days, and the cousins are mostly actual cousins.

Age 51: Family Portrait

Today would have been Mom's 85th birthday. Photo by Richard Dinda , probably in April, certainly in 2000.
