This music crept by me ...

30 Jan 2019 2 3 201
"This music crept by me upon the waters" (The Tempest, by Shakespeare); or, rather, I ignorantly passed over the Schumann Fantasia for many decades before recently coming to love it. I heard this recording of Richter at Abbey Road Studios in online quality and decided I must have a real CD copy: even if I had to get it from Japan! I would happily have this CD as my grave goods. The CD also includes The Tempest Sonata by Beethoven. In another life I played that Sonata to a panel of senior professors at the RAM in London. They are all dead now, so it is too late for me to apologise.

Beethoven Sonaten

This hardback book containing all 32 of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas in clear, crisp typeface, was purchased in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, in 1934. It was a gift for someone - no price is shown but just 5 years after the Wall Street crash, this must have been a very expensive present.

Zum Schwarzen Kameel, Vienna

The composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) regularly drank red wine at the Kameel. According to an 1820 order slip hand-written by Beethoven, he had the Kameel deliver to his house: two and a half litres of Austrian white wine, fine and regular sugar and the very best coffee… – without which, he said, he was not able to compose.
