This year's Native Orchid Conference symposium was held on July 14-17 at Lake Itasca, Minnesota. The first day's field trip was to Iron Spring Bog, near Lake Itasca. I was excited about visiting this bog, since it was home to a little-seen orchid, Malaxis paludosa or Bog Adder's-mouth orchid as well as a number of other orchid species. From a distance, this little beauty is merely a thin green "stick" with lumps. But up close, it has an exquisite beauty... To learn more about this wonderful place, please go to Jim's Blog ...

Today was a travel day. We returned to New Ferolle Lighthouse to photograph the Malaxis monophyllos or White Adder's-mouth orchid (hopefully) in bloom. It had been four days since we saw it in bud. From there, we made a quick visit to Point Riche, where the waves were crashing against the rocky shoreline. We then stopped off at Arches Provincial Park, home of huge, natural arches formed in the limestone reefs at the edge of the beach. We had been given a heads-up on the location for one of North America's smallest orchids. It is called Malaxis monophyllos or White Adder's-mouth orchid. I was told the exact location, but without the tiny sticks that had been placed near the plants, I probably would not have seen them. They were only in bud, so we would have to revisit the site on our way back about a week later. For more of the story and more images, please visit Jim's Blog ...
