Epidendrum magnoliae (Green-fly orchid)

These little orchids are just beginning to bloom in my front yard next to the porch. I rescued them a few years ago from a large limb that had fallen in a storm along the Atlantic coastal plain in South Carolina, and they manage to bloom for me around this time every year. I have them growing under the shade of a large camellia. Scuttlebutt has it that the botanical name has changed back to what it was many years ago, but I'm keeping with the most recent incarnation...

Epidendrum magnoliae (Green-fly orchid)

Several years ago, I went to a site near Charleston, South Carolina where I had seen Epidendrum magnoliae or Green-fly orchid in bloom during the month of July. There had been a recent wind storm where limbs loaded with this orchid species had fallen to the ground. The limbs had already been cut up for firewood! Seeing the orchids growing on the firewood, I "rescued" a single small limb and took it back home with me. It has bloomed every year since, and this year, it has just begun to bloom. It's nice to have a special native orchid to bloom in my front yard.

Spiranthes laciniata (Lacelip Ladies'-tresses orch…

This is a super Spiranthes orchid species. I rescued a couple of plants from a plowed/scraped roadside in southeast Georgia ten years ago, and now I have 15 bloom spikes! It ranges from coastal New Jersey to southeastern Texas but is not plentiful. The plants in my bog garden are at least 3 feet (1 meter) tall when in full bloom. A great show piece to accompany the pitcher plants.

Epidendrum magnoliae (Green-fly orhchid)

Well, the small epiphytic orchid plant that I rescued last summer is finally blooming in my front yard. I'm really excited that I was able to pull it through our relatively cold winter, several hundred miles north of its preferred growing location near Charleston, South Carolina. The less than one-inch (2.5 cm) flowers seem to sparkle in the sunshine. And, they produce a delightfully sweet, floral aroma but only at night. This specimen should provide additional photographic opportunity as more buds open in the coming week.
