Honest Ed's, 2010

Toronto. My favourite moment in Ed's was seeing a group of men in Mao jackets being escorted past a display of backlit Last Suppers. They had clearly been overwhelmed by the range of Ed's stock. The store was opened in 1948 by Ed and Anne Mirvish and closed in 2016. Even when I was a tiny child I thought the store was crowded, so you can imagine how it seemed when I was older. The PiP at top left shows a longer view of thw same elevation, with some of Ed's typical signs.

Theatre in the alley

A Fringe Festival production being staged in the alley that ran through Honest Ed's department store in Toronto. The name of the production is a bit crude but if you're feeling crudity-proof click the pic to enlarge it and have a look at the sign on the platform. For some history of Honest Ed's, click the picture in the PiP at upper left. I don't know why they removed the spinning red-and-yellow globes; they were cool.
