Last week Lene and I spent a few days in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Just two weeks earlier it had still been snowing, but we arrived for some mild and sunny spring days in this beautiful city - the "Venice of the North". The " Catherine Palace " just South of Saint Petersburg was the summer residence of the Russian tsars. These are the bulb domes on top of the palace chapel. Deliberately destroyed during the war by retreating German troops, the Palace and park has now been almost completely restored to it's former splendor. Visiting lavish palaces like this always leaves me with pity for the impoverished serfs that had to pay for it, but I have to admit it is a very impressive part of Russia's history. The pose of statues of the goddess Bastet has led some owners of Abyssinian (and Somali) cats to believe that their cats descend drectly from the sacred cats of Egypt. Last week Lene and I spent a few days in Switzerland. We were on a six hour paddlesteamer trip on the Vierwaldstättersee from Lucerne to Flüelen and back.
