Stay Straight

09 Apr 2013 438
2013 World Synchronized Skating Championships, Boston, MA - Jingu Ice Messengers Grace - Japanese National Champions I brought my new Sigma 18-250 Macro lens to try out at the competition. It is a slower lens (3.5-6.3) which meant that I had to boost the ISO. I wanted to see how quickly it would focus in low light and I was very pleased with the speed. My old Canon 40D is very grainy at 1250 ISO, but the lens was relatively sharp at all focal lengths. The graininess problem should be resolved by my next camera (hopefully the Canon 70D). There was an unusually large pincushion distortion, most of which could be corrected in Photoshop. Compromises had to be made to achieve such a large focal length, but It is superb for what it does. A spot on review can be found at www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma-18-250mm-3p5-6p3-os-hs... . AIMG_8499

Male Hercules Beetle on sugarcane. The Hercules Beetle is one of the largest rhinocerous beetles and can grow up to half a foot long including the horn, although it usually somwhat smaller. It can carry 850 times its body weight and, as was this one, is sometimes kept as a pet.
