Dunstaffnage Castle near Oban, Scotland, dates back to the 13th century. It is built on a small peninsula with the Firth of Lorne to the west and Loch Etive to the east and north.
This is a view northwards showing the southern aspect of the castle keep, built on an outcrop of Devonian age conglomerate (Kerrera Sandstone Formation).
The archway and walls in the lower left mark the start of the track leading to the nearby Chapel.

Dunstaffnage Castle near Oban, Scotland, dates back to the 13th century. It is built on a small peninsula with the Firth of Lorne to the west and Loch Etive to the east and north.
This is a view northwards from the southern parapet, overlooking the central courtyard. The gatehouse is on the right; the gravelled area in the centre with the seat marks the remains of the Great Hall. At the lower left is the well, with its four pillars and protective grille.

The castle gatehouse is well preserved and restored, with wooden flooring and windows on the various levels.
