John Turner was awarded the E. Mackintosh Gold Dux Medal at Milne's Institution on 26th June 1914, aged eighteen, a hundred years ago now, and just over a month later, with the outbreak of WWI, volunteered, and was a sniper for the duration of the First World War. After victory, he studied at Edinburgh University, gaining a First Class Honours degree in Classics.
