John Turner was awarded the E. Mackintosh Gold Dux Medal at Milne's Institution on 26th June 1914, aged eighteen, a hundred years ago now, and just over a month later, with the outbreak of WWI, volunteered, and was a sniper for the duration of the First World War. After victory, he studied at Edinburgh University, gaining a First Class Honours degree in Classics. He attended Milne's by walking with his small sister from their home at Tynet, beside St Ninian's Church, three miles each way, every day, winter and summer!
