Ubley Warren Nature Reserve - part of the Mendip AONB. The area has a long history of lead mining dating back to pre-Roman times to the 1800s and the land is scarred by overgrown old mine workings, shafts, rakes (shallow, vertical-walled cuttings through the bedrock where lead veins running close to the surface have been excavated), . and spoil heaps contouring the landscape. The Reserve forms part of the Cheddar Complex Site of Special Scientific Interest, protected areas along the top of the Cheddar Gorge, famous for it's dramatic beauty and it's caves.
