Wilde Exemplare finden sich im östlichen Nordamerika, wo sich die Elternarten überlappen. Die Art ist nach Oliver M. Freeman vom U.S. National Arboretum benannt, der 1933 A. rubrum mit A. saccharinum hybridisierte. Das Herbstlaub ist auffallend orange-rot. Es gibt viele im Handel erhältliche Sorten, die häufig als Straßenbaum verwendet werden. Am 18. August 2018 fand im Rahmen der Landesgartenschau in Würzburg eine Lichternacht statt mit Musik, Shows und einem Ballonglühen. Im Rhythmus von stimmungsvoller Musik wurden dabei vier Heißluftballone zum Aufleuchten gebracht. Ein einmaliges Erlebnis.
