Predated Small White Butterfly

16 May 2014 2 211
Not a great photo per se, but the subject I found interesting. This was one of my Small White Butterfly larva, it had completed making a pupa but a small wasp (likely Cotesia glomerata wasp [thanks to Rockwolf for the likely ID]) kept hanging around the larva and pupa. This is the restult, obviously hatched out. The next photo shows that at the same sorta date a Small White has emerged fine. Photos from under our eve of roof. What I found interesting was that the wasp sat up on the eve for days waiting I suppose, but did wait until the larva was in full pupation to go away (finish predating it).

Braconid Wasp Pupae

These look similar to pupa I've seen on Burnet caterpillars, but not sure, maybe wasp? Thank you Rockwolf for getting me to the family of wasp!

BAS Field Meeting at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, where we were in search of some of the more rare spiders recorded. Found this beetle larva feeding on a snail, not sure of the ID.

Not sure what will emerge from this little hide a way, but we saw quite a few of these on long stems of grass or twigs. Update: Thanks to Evan for letting me know these are spider egg sacs :)

Patio Life: Unknown Caterpillar

I think this will be some type of sawfly, but I'm not sure about that. I rescued some garlic mustard from the footpath and recenly found this guy and a smaller identical one on it. He hides during the day and feeds at night. I cant see any real damage hes doing yet, but will keep my eyes on it, Sawflies can eat ALOT..lol and I've got at least one Orange Tip on this plant so need to keep it healthy, but there are only two

I think this will be some type of sawfly, but I'm not sure about that. Sawfly larvae tend to have legs on nearly all segments of thier bodies, were as moth or butterfly larvae have three front legs and only 6 or 8 prolegs.

Sawfly Larva - Periclista pubescens

01 Jun 2010 152
This maybe an early one, I've been through every one on ukleps.org and can't find anything like him. We measured him but due to the curve on him, its going to be approx 10-15mm. He was found on light so probably nocturnal. Thanks to Charley over at HantsMoths for the ID on this guy at spieces level of Sawfly, its likely to be Periclista pubescens although I'm not 100% on that.

I have a few practically resident hoverflies, and one definitely laid eggs on a herbi bushy thing I have last fall. No idea what these babies are yet.

Ok bit of a story with this... My friend has a worm house thingy, looks like a compost heap but its for feeding refuge to worms... they are very happy worms I might add! Anyway, there is a spout and the worm pee (I think it may be called leachate) drains off, it makes a brilliant concentrated fertilizer. It has lots of dead creatures in it that had the misfortune of getting in it while it was an open bucket under the spout. She poured it into one of those big air tight jars like a mason but bigger, and I brought it home. A few days later I used some in my watering, and sealed it back up. A few days ago, I opened it up to use again and these were worming around in it!! Now its been sealed pretty much air tight, setting in a shadyish place and what on earth can live in worm pee!! I asssure you this guy is very much alive, and there are probably about 10-15 more in the jar. So what is he, what does he want, is he really content to live in the worm pee or will he be ok in my tiny make shift pond? That appears to be some sort of tail on it, but it can move that as well...I've got NO idea. The worm pee will run out at some stage there is only a few inches of it in the glass jar. Update: Thanks to Derbyshire Harrier for the help with the ID on these guys! And of course all the other useful suggestions... :O

Six-spot Burnet Caterpillar Parasitised and Cocoon…

These should all be pupating now, so any left out, acting odd like this one just sitting have likely been parasitised by some type of Parasitic Wasp.
