lamb jackets: Plan C

Before we got them, I had sewn little polar fleece jackets for our lambs, following a pattern from a sheep farmer. Our robust boys were already too big for them. It was late and we were tired from a long weekend of partaying, so we cut some pieces from a thick old towel (40x50cm) and used paper masking tape to fasten them. Perfect! The non-stretchy tape keeps them from tightening; it's easily removable (just rip off the tape) and can be re-fastened with more room later. One ring of tape around the neck and another around the chest and it stays on perfectly. They are warm and cosy.

We took their hind legs out of the elastic loops, but then they just flopped around, often to the front, stopping them from walking properly. On to Plan C...

We used to keep the poddy lambs under a heat lamp, but last year our friends Yvonne and Richard gave us some one-use-only lamb jackets. With the jackets on they didn't need the heat lamp, and they slept better without a light all night. These jackets were a special jacket especially for lambs including the ones you may not catch again, eg small lambs with their mums. The pure wool felt jackets were made to gradually fall apart as the lamb grew, eventually dropping off. But they are pricey, so this year I googled "lamb jackets" and found many patterns for them. I made this one according to the measurements given, but these young lambs are already so big, the jackets are already a bit too small. The leg elastic was stretched tight, and the neck was only just wide enough. So on to Plan B...
