1961 Wolseley 1500 MkII - 446 UXY

What you might call an honest survivor. Not a show winner and far from exceptionally clean, but I admired this little car despite that and in fact it was maybe it's honesty that made it most appealing. The MkII Wolseley 1500 was introduced in 1960, but the overall style and layout wasn't significantly altered from the earlier MkI. The most notable development was the more modern look achieved by the boot and bonnet hinges now being hidden. The side chrome trim was also remodelled, losing the circled 'W' and now extending to the front of the car before returning to the wheel arch. Sadly, the Mk II was short lived, after only a year and a half’s life it was replaced with another slightly improved version: the Wolseley 1500 MkIII. Source: www.wolseleyownersclub.com

1966 Wolseley 1100 - EUX 869D

This old 'land crab' looked pretty neat overall although there did appear to be something going on with that front wing. Based on the BMC ADO16 platform it was one of several economical small family cars built by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and, later, British Leyland. It was launched in 1962 and for most of the next decade the ADO16 was consistently the UK's best-selling car. The ADO16 was marketed under various make and model names including: Austin 1100 and 1300; MG 1100 and 1300; and Riley Kestrel as well as the Wolseley 1100, 1275, and 1300 to name but a few. Badge engineering ... don't you just miss it!

Really enjoyed seeing this old Wolseley, as I remember the father of a childhood friend having one of these back in the Seventies. Long since lost touch with the Cambridge family and I would guess the father, Brendan, may not still be alive, but happy memories all the same!

The more I see of these little cars, the more I like them. Sadly, production ceased in the late Sixties when British Leyland discontinued the Riley and Wolseley brand names.

A shot of some of what was on offer from Ripon Old Cars ... just a shame about the pesky bunting!

Here's another shot of the Wolseley for good measure, this time ever so slightly off to the side. For some strange reason though the colour doesn't look so strong here.

The introduction of the 6/99 in 1959 market was a break with tradition for the “big Wolseley” range. For over quarter of a century, Wolseley had been Morris derivatives, but, horror of horrors, this new car was in fact a badge-engineered AUSTIN, being a luxury version of the A99 Westminster. Up close and personal with the Elf ... rather apt with Christmas looming!

Built as more luxurious versions of the Mini, both the Wolseley Hornet and the Riley Elf had longer, slightly finned rear wings and larger boots that gave the cars a more traditional design. Production reportedly ceased in late 1969 when British Leyland discontinued the Riley and Wolseley brand names so this particular car, first registered on 5th December 1969, would have been one of the last produced.
