Little Red Fire Truck ...

19 Jan 2015 6 4 963
I had so much fun with this week's Sunday Challenge , which had the theme of selective colouring , that I ended up with several possibles. Here's one of those that didn't get used. This is the interior of the little red fire engine I spotted at the Classics On Show event back in 2013.

1960 Ford Thames 400E - 537 UXT

The Ford Thames 400E was a commercial vehicle made by Ford of Britain and introduced in 1957. This particular one as you can see though is not your average van. Used by Storthes Hall Hospital Fire Brigade it was based at the psychiatric hospital in West Yorkshire and served as a fully functioning, but very small, fire engine. Once again, not quite what you exect to come across at a classic car show.

1960 BMW Isetta 300 - 59 BUY

The Isetta is an Italian-designed microcar built under license in a number of different countries and which, because of its egg shape and bubble-like windows became known as a bubble car - a name later given to other similar vehicles. In Germany, BMW made the Isetta its own. They redesigned not only the powerplant but also re-engineered much of the car, so much so that none of the parts between a BMW Isetta Moto Coupe and an Iso Isetta are interchangeable. Here's that 1960/2008 bus from the rear with the main show ground and Heaves Hotel itself in the distance.

Well, we have a saying in the UK that you wait ages for a bus and then two come along at once, but rarely do they look this good! Interestingly, the oldest of the two was only registered here in 2008 so I guess it must be a recent import.

Time at last me thinks to start another automotive album, this time capturing some of the shots I took at CumbriaVAG 2011 . A cracking little show it was held at the Heaves Hotel on the outskirts of Kendal in Cumbria although I believe more recent shows have taken elsewhere. This was one of my favourite shots of the day as it summed up all that was special about this laid back event: a great selection of vehicles, all nicely laid out, and sunshine aplenty. Oh, and that kid taking the notes could well been me 30 or 35 years ago!

Not an expert on these, in fact this is the first one I remember shooting. However, I think it must be something of a 'sleeper' as I don't think they would originally have had nearly 3 litres under the hood!

This was apparently a reworked 100E body with the new 997cc overhead valve engine. On test, it recorded a top speed of 73 mph (117 km/h) and acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 27.2 seconds. A "touring" fuel consumption of 36 miles per gallon (imperial) was also recorded and on the home market, it cost £621, including taxes. Optional extras included a heater, windscreen washers, radio and leather upholstery to replace the standard PVC.
