When We Remember ...

11 Nov 2016 58 42 2050
Created for Armistice Day, which is commemorated every year on November 11th to mark the agreement signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France marking the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning: the "eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month" of 1918. The image is a composite of two photos I took earlier this year. The first was of an field of poppies that I came across on the outskirts of Thirsk. This forms the basis of the image and it has then been combined with a quick shot I snapped of what I thought at the time was a Lancaster bomber, which flew over me while I was at Ripley, North Yorkshire. I've given it a slightly painterly edge to it simply because I thought it increased the feeling of fluidity I witnessed whilst walking amongst the poppies. Also for Remembrance Sunday ... lest we forget. *Thanks to those who have been kind enough to confirm that the plane is indeed a Lancaster and to Pam J in particular for providing the great link below: www.raf.mod.uk/bbmf/theaircraft/lancasterpa474.cfm

Delivering Good Value ...

24 Jul 2016 16 49 1477
For this week's Sunday Challenge , which had the theme of slogans . I found this one on the side of a Boyes delivery wagon/lorry as it was being unloaded outside the rear of their Northallerton store. The shot was taken from the front corner of the truck looking up towards and along the side of the trailer unit. The business was started way back in 1881 when William Boyes opened a small outlet in Eastborough, Scarborough selling odd lots and remnants from merchants. Since then the company has continued to grow, the range of goods they offer has increased dramatically and they now operate over fifty stores. The majority of them are in located in Yorkshire and the North East of England, but they also have stores in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. People looking for "Good Value" (defined by the company as a combination of quality and price) visit Boyes because "they have built a reputation for selling a massive range of quality goods at bargain prices, selling virtually everything for the Home and Family, all with friendly and helpful service". You can find out more about the company by following the link below: www.boyes.co.uk
