No, not a sign that I'm going back to flickr, just another one from the 'processing room', which I hope some of you will enjoy seeing. Three images blended with some 'brushy wizadry' on top!

Or even just a sign of better times to come for ipernity and those that care so deeply for it ... as ever though, the Devil may well be in the detail. Or perhaps it's all just too little too late and we are all damned. Ipernity Members Association Project Please view on black for best effect ... while you still can!

Virtue And Industry ...

A belated entry for this week's Sunday Challenge , for which we were asked to produce an image that matched our idea of maximalism . This is actually 3 images combined of the glass façade of the new £53 million Ayrshire College, which opened this year and occupies the area of the town where the old Johnnie Walker factory was located. Travelling through the town last week on the way back 'home' to North Yorkshire following a family funeral this was the first time I'd seen the new building up close and I was blown away by the scale of it. The design of the main entrance incorporates so much glass that it seemed an ideal subject to shoot for the challenge. As it happens, the world famous brand of Scotch whisky owned now by Diageo actually originated in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. It is believed to be the most widely distributed brand of blended Scotch whisky in the world, sold in almost every country, with annual sales of over 130 million bottles. Sadly, in 2009 Diageo announced that under a restructuring programme production would be moved from the brand's original home to Diageo plants in Leven, Fife, and Shieldhall, Glasgow. So in March 2012, the Johnnie Walker plant (then the largest employer in the town of Kilmarnock) closed its doors and the name joined a long list of world famous brands that had once originated from or been heavily associated with the town: names such as Massey-Harris (later Massey-Ferguson) and Saxone Shoes. We can only hope then that some of the bright young students that will pass through the doors of this most impressive looking new college will go on to develop ideas, products and businesses that will in time become equally famous and provide employment for local people because overall it has to be said my hometown needs to find a new direction. Incidentally, the old Kilmarnock College campus on Holehouse Road, which was the predecessor if you like to the huge new Ayrshire college is still there although I'm not sure what the long-term plans are for that particular site.

The Mighty World Of Comics ...

A bit of fun created for this week's Sunday Challenge , where the theme was comics ... those paper-based publications that transported children (and some adults) into imaginary worlds where anything was possible and all long before game consoles came along. What you could shoot for this week's challenge and the style of presentation was pretty wide open ... pretty much anything was acceptable as long as it had something to do with comics or was presented in a comic style. Having been a great reader, collector and hoarder of comics growing up I decided to create an spherical collage featuring many of the titles I grew up with. The majority of them are from the Sixties and Seventies although there are a couple from the Eighties. The individual covers you can see within the sphere are all comics from my own collection. Each was photographed individually a while back when I was thinking of maybe selling them to raise some cash, then over the last few days they were brought together in a random fashion, before being turned into the sphere you see here. So, hit z to view large and see how many you remember?

This was actually created, but not used for The Sunday Challenge , which had the theme of collage , and comprises two images I'd produced for an earlier challenge entitled shadows .

The Sunday Challenge - Collage

20 Jul 2014 16 27 1163
So this has been one of those weeks where I thought I had things sorted and knew what I was doing only to realise on Saturday that I was totally on the wrong path. You see the challenge, for those not in the know, was to create a collage of your favourite challenge so far, using new images ... not images already taken, which is what I've foolishly done here. My interpretation of what a collage is might also be my second big mistake of the week. You see I took a shot of coloured water in a glass and combined that with some shots I took of light passing through that glass onto the coals in our gas fire to form a single new image. Then, in turn, I've created an overlay that attempts to make it look as if the new combined image is actually made up of several smaller shots ... a sort of scattered image if you like in a style perhaps reminiscent of the David Hockney poster entitled "The Desk". To be fair though, despite my reservations about how I've approached the challenge, I actually kind of like the finished result. It might have worked slightly better if I'd had time to micro-manage the position of the individual snaps just a little, but I ran out of time so it is what it is. Like I say, I kind of like it, but as ever I'd welcome any comments or feedback you guys care to leave.
