One of the common Orb-web spiders in the Neotropical areas, they often spread their webs across paths between shrubs, and so can provide an unexpected surprise for anyone not paying attention. Fortunately, they usually grow to a maximum leg spread of about 50mm, and are quite pretty to look at.
