About 300 skeletons were counted when mud was removed from Herculaneum's boathouses, enabling this dramatic discovery. They remain where they were found (a fatal refuge) and they tell a lot about the terrible last moments of life of those people.

Found where the victims died, after removing the mud that covered them for centuries. These chambers were boathouses sought for shelter - however, intense heat was as fatal for everybody as anywhere else in Herculaneum.

They were all discovered in boathouses they sought for shelter, believing it was the safest place in Herculaneum. The air and the ashes were so hot that brains inflated and exploded, leaving the skulls by holes or cracks produced in the process. During centuries skeletons remained buried in mud.
