In the late 19th century Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, reached the sea but it has now retreated 6 km inland. Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon with its icebergs is 284m deep and 18km² large and is expected to grow further. In the end it will probably turn into a fjord. Since 2017 Jökulsárlón is part of Vatnajökull National Park which also is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2019. whc.unesco.org/en/list/1604
