Looking out over Breiðafjörður from Styykishólmur harbour, on the left are the basalt columns of Súgandisey.
In the note ferry "Baldur" getting ready for her morning crossing to the Westfjords.
The current "Baldur" was bult in 1969 and originally sailed under Norwegian flag as Lofoten ferry "Vagan". She's now starting to show her age with repeated machine trouble: www.icelandreview.com/travel/baldur-ferry-breaks-down-again-service-may-be-suspended

Súgandisey is a small basaltic island sheltering Styykishólmur harbour. Situated on the island's highest point, the lighthouse from 1948 is only 3,5m high but that suffices to assist navigation through the many islands of Breiðafjörður and into Stykkishólmur harbour which is the ferry port for the Westfjords.

On 13th March 1948, the Grimsby steel trawler Epine GY7 struck rocks and was wrecked in a blizzard off Dritvik. Of the 19 crew only 5 survived. The remains of the trawler were washed up on Djúpalónssandur and are now protected (see inset photos).

Grundarfjörður is a small fishing town (less than 900 inhabitants) on the north coast of Snæfellsnes peninsula. This photo of the harbour was taken on a rainy and windy evening- the waterfall in the background was blown upwards.

Situated on Snæfellsnes peninsula, Búðir used to be an important trading post until 1930. Nowadays only the church and a hotel are left. The church dates from 1848 and is one of the oldest wooden churches in Iceland.

The pebbles at Djúpalónssandur are called Djúpalóns pearls, they are used for making jewelry. The outer layer is of volcanic glass whereas the inner part is fully crystallized (Benmoreite). That much I gathered from volcanologist Haraldur Sigurðsson's blog (it's in Icelandic and online translators make rather a hash of the language...)
