Dated 1563 internally, the older section being the surviving part of a larger house, but the two gables belong to late C17 extensions which, according to the Buildings of England , "may be the work of Dr Humphrey Gower, Master of St John's College Cambridge, who bequeathed the house to his college as vacation retreat for his successors".
