Südlich der kleinen Hafenstadt Hasle fand seit dem 17./18. Jahrhundert Kohleabbau statt. Allerdings war die Kohle von sehr schlechter Qualität und die Nachfrage war außer in Kriegszeiten recht gering. Allerdings stieß man auf brauchbare Lehmschichten, das wiederum beförderte die Klinker- und Schamottsteinherstellung. All das ist längs Geschichte, doch die Abbaustätten können besichtigt werden, dort gibt es große Informationstafeln mit Texten auf dänisch, deutsch und englisch. Heute ein Museum, in dem aber immer noch Silber in Gold verwandelt wird, mit anderen Worten, es werden Heringe geräuchert. Ein Bornholm-Besuch ohne Einkehr in eine Räucherei ist möglich, aber sinnlos (frei nach Loriot). Today this old smokehouse is a museum but one in which they still turn silver into gold - in other words they smoke herrings there.
