Heute ein Museum, in dem aber immer noch Silber in Gold verwandelt wird, mit anderen Worten, es werden Heringe geräuchert. Ein Bornholm-Besuch ohne Einkehr in eine Räucherei ist möglich, aber sinnlos (frei nach Loriot). Today this old smokehouse is a museum but one in which they still turn silver into gold - in other words they smoke herrings there. Now I'm just a lonesome cowboy with a bit of wire, standing around uselessly. I wish the "Heart of Gold" would stop by, or the Vogons, for even their poetry would make for a bit of a change from herd after herd of Welsh sheep, which I can't keep inside the field any more. Die Möwen sehen alle aus, als ob sie Emma hießen. Sie tragen einen weißen Flaus und sind mit Schrot zu schießen. Ich schieße keine Möwe tot, ich laß sie lieber leben - und füttre sie mit Roggenbrot und rötlichen Zibeben. O Mensch, du wirst nie nebenbei der Möwe Flug erreichen. Wofern du Emma heißest, sei zufrieden, ihr zu gleichen. Christian Morgenstern (am Südstrand von Wyk auf Föhr) The gist of this poem in English: All gulls look as if their name was Emma. It is said they ought to be killed with a shotgun. But I don't kill them, I feed them instead. You and I will never be able to fly like a gull, but if your name is Emma be content to resemble her (the German word for 'seagull' is a female noun) at least. The little building on the far right, whose roof is poking out over the drystone wall, was my abode for this week on Lundy. In August you have to get up around half six to catch the morning sun, but on Lundy the weather is so unpredictable and changes so fast that I actually had different weather every single day of the week. It's spring at Lake Krupunder - men are behaving like little boys playing with their model sailboats.
