This Could Be The Last Time

It was black and white. I photographed it in a black and white simulation JPG. Spookily there was a yellow bit. Under strong interrogation in Lightroom the yellow bit became more forthcoming. A new picture emerged.

Heavy Welting

Fashion feature in a 1960s magazine. Photographed with a Nikon D2Xs and a Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 AI lens. Sixty years ago the photographic style seemed more confident and the creative ideas more diverse and occasionally ambiguous.

Distortion

I rediscovered this copy of 'She' magazine dated December, 1966. Capriciously I distorted the photograph in processing. The words are nevertheless legible. The woman in the picture (who had no function to perform in regard to the men's coat under review) now looks even more stricken by something. The magazine gave no credit to the photographer. He or she clearly knew their stuff and maybe couldn't care less about acknowledgement beyond being paid. I should like to see more examples of this photographer's work. 'She' was a British women's monthly magazine that ran for 56 years, from 1955 to September, 2011. having been relaunched in 1988 and revitalised in 2005. It was quite good but the magazine industry is cut-throat. It was unintentional, but it seems to me that the effect of distorting the image has been to make the model look a bit like Victoria Beckham, the former Posh Spice.

Pick of the Month

An old edition of the ‘Radio Times’ from 1966, open at a page where the broadcaster Joan Bakewell appears alongside companions of the Late Night Line-Up team who have collectively been chosen to present a new programme called ‘Pick of the Month’. Late Night Line-Up was a pioneering British television discussion programme broadcast on BBC2 between 1964 and 1972. Joan Bakewell was born Joan Dawson Rowlands in Stockport and was head girl at Stockport High School for Girls. She went to Newnham College, Cambridge. I am not sure why this is interesting, nor am I sure why people are photographed with their chin in their hand. Joan Bakewell lives alone and though she mostly enjoys drinking with friends, she will also drink when she is on her own. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19508585 She did not like being described by the late Frank Muir as ‘ the thinking man's crumpet’. She is now 81 years of age. Good luck to you, Joan Bakewell.
