Royal Mail

Ashton Street. Random Fact No.1: The 'ROYAL MAIL' legend first appeared on letter boxes in the early 1990s; prior to this letter boxes had the words 'POST OFFICE' cast onto them. The change was prompted by the separation of Post Office Counters Limited and Royal Mail as independent companies. Random Fact No.2: In the early days of letterboxes they were painted green so that they would not be obtrusive. That led to complaints from people who could not find them. To Baden-Powell for His Dustbin

The poem in this double exposure was printed in the "Daily Mirror" during 1969. What appears here is incomplete but sufficient to gain a flavour; the writer is Daniel Pinter who was an adolescent at the time yet with a gift for expression in this often difficult medium. This is not how it appeared in the newspaper; it appeared then without a background. I think the "Daily Mirror" was better in those days. It had a bit more intellectual width.

85mm Lens

Using an 85mm lens on a full frame camera ought to be a similar experience to shooting with a 50mm lens on a cropped sensor SLR such as the Canon EOS 30D. Strangely it feels rather different. This photograph was made with a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 lens on a Nikon D3s.

Subject: A Cokin camera strap with a button badge. The strap is so old that I have forgotten how I came by it. The badge was on a birthday card several anniversaries ago. Equipment: Nikon D3s and Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 AI lens. ISO 12,800. Observation: I started photography with 100 ISO film. The ISO in this digital photograph is seven stops more sensitive to light. Can it be real?

An Old 85mm Lens

In the picture is a Nikkor-H Auto 85mm f/1.8 lens made circa 1971. Nikon never provided these lenses in Ai configuration and their production run was terminated in 1977, having been available in F mount from 1964. You can see from the prongs that this one has been converted to Ai status. It took a long time to find one like this. They seem to be highly prized. Thomas Pindelski reckons it is superior to the AF-D version which came later: pindelski.org/Photography/2013/02/22/nikkor-h-85mm-f1-8-lens and almost everyone agrees the f/2 version which was the immediate successor when Ai came in is a poor job by comparison.

Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 AI lens on a Nikon D300s. This is an extraordinary lens of exceptional resolution whether deployed close up or more conventionally. Used on a crop sensor camera it provides a field of view of around 80mm.
