The Nikon FE is one of the few Nikon SLR cameras which can mount almost any Nikkor, including pre-Ai, although the modern 'G' lenses are no use because they lack an aperture ring. The lens pictured on this FE is the Nikkor Type C 55mm f/3.5 Micro-PC Auto, manufactured between 1973 and 1975. As it is a pre-Ai lens, the little flap on the lens throat of the FE has to be lifted prior to fitting the lens. Photographed with an AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D on a Nikon D90.

I used a Nikkor Type C 55mm f/3.5 Micro-PC Auto lens on a Nikon D50. By itself, that would damage the lens throat of the D50, and, indeed, any Nikon digital camera with an automatic focus screw drive mechanism. The Type C is an old pre AI lens but it is possible to work round the problem by interposing an M2 extension ring, which can be safely mounted on a D50. The subject is a Nikon FE film camera.
