I tried several lenses to photograph this scene: a 28-80mm cheap zoom, mainly at the telephoto end; a 50mm; a 35mm with image stabilisation and close-focus capability; and an old 55mm macro. I thought the 35mm had the best chance of getting the picture, but in the end it was the 50mm.
When I started out in photography it was with a 50mm (well, a 58mm to be exact). On all subsequent cameras I first got a 50mm until eventually digital claimed me and I bought a Nikon D60 with an 18-55mm kit lens. But I soon added a 50mm equivalent to take some proper pictures.

A New Dress

The new dress, as yet uncompleted, was shot as a JPG, at 1/320th and f/4 with ISO set at 800, using a Nikon D700, with a Nikkor-H Auto 85mm f/1.8 lens.
For many years I searched sporadically for a Nikkor-H 85mm f/1.8 lens which had been factory-adapted to the new Nikon AI system introduced in 1977. The company never offered the lens in the AI range because they had a more compact f/2 lens ready to go. Opinions vary over which was the better lens, but there is strong affection for the original. At long last I found one for sale; cosmetically beaten up but still functional, as you might expect of a Nikkor lens of the 1964-77 period.

The Girl Who Fell Out

Now it came to pass that I walked from the elevated section of Maud Heath's causeway at Kellaways towards Langley Burrell.
And as I approached Brunel's twin-arched bridge under his railway I espied a vacant sun dress upon the stonework leading to the bridge.
Of the occupant there was no sign. She appeared to have wriggled free or simply fallen out.
I checked inside to be sure. I learned only that her name was 'Primark'.
I left the dress where it was in case she was hiding in the undergrowth.
However, the possibility that the sundress had been thrown from the window of a passing train overhead could not be excluded.
All this is perfectly true.

I have discovered that the Fuji X-E1 struggles with accurate recording of blue colours. I don't recall this was always a fault. Maybe my X-E1 is too old.
In addition, I am reminded of why the Nikkor-H 50mm f/2 lens (used to take this picture) enjoys such a good reputation even long after it has gone out of production.

Nikon D2Xs and Nikkor-O.C 35mm f/2 lens. According to Pindelski, "this lens is fully the equal of any Leitz or Leica 35mm Summicron on a Leica M". He also observes that it is a great deal cheaper too. pindelski.org/Photography/2012/05/05/nikkor-o-35mm-f2-lens/

Nikon D2Xs + Nikkor-O.C Auto 35mm f/2 lens. Lens made circa 1973. Camera on 800 ISO - not where the D2Xs does its best work, but needs must if no flash. Aperture wide open at f/2. High speed crop deployed, making the field of view experience 2 x 35mm. (All the characteristics of the 35mm nevertheless remain). Using high speed crop is handy for getting in closer, but it halves the MP from 12 to 6 and it would therefore be a better idea to change to a lens with greater telephoto capability.

One very helpful benefit of digital photography is the ability to see whether the effect you want has been achieved. This was shot with a Nikon D700 and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens set at f/5.6.

Nikon D2Xs + Nikkor 135mm f/2.8 AI lens. 135mm translates to a field of view of 270mm on a crop sensor DX camera. This picture of laundry in a cupboard was made in poor light, as can plainly be seen from the totally dark recesses. I was forced into an ISO of 800 which whilst possible with the D2Xs, is not to be recommended from a noise point of view. Even using the lens wide open I had to reduce the shutter to a speed of 1/160th when half that would have been more sensible for a hand-held shot. I rather enjoy pushing the limits, but there is a high wastage rate. Attempting low-light photography with a dinosaur like the D2Xs demands really fast lenses, Two more stops would have been helpful here.
